Contemplate the name Hauz Khas. It means Royal Tank. This name hints at the area’s history. Hauz Khas is a neighborhood in South Delhi. But it is more than just that. It is also the site of a medieval village’s remains.

In the late 13th century, Allauddin Khilji built a large water tank. The tank’s purpose was to supply water to Siri’s inhabitants. Siri was a city nearby. The tank ensured a year-round water supply. During the monsoon, it collected water. This water then served the people during the dry season. The original tank was huge. It spanned over 100 acres. It was also about 4 meters deep.

Centuries later, in the 14th century, more structures appeared here. A mosque and madrasa were built. Feruz Shah built these overlooking the tank. Today only the madrasa’s ruins remain. But in its prime, it was a renowned Islamic seminary. People considered it among the best in the world. This was especially true after the Sack of Baghdad.

Feruz Shah’s tomb also overlooks the tank. He was an enlightened ruler. He ordered the construction of monuments and public works. These included mosques and hospitals. He also initiated irrigation projects. All of this promoted prosperity. It also bolstered the kingdom’s culture. His tomb is relatively austere. It blends Indian and Islamic architectural styles. The interior has an 8.8-meter-high dome. It was built using quartzite rubble. Plaster added lustre to it.

Today you can explore the Hauz Khas buildings. They may be in ruins. But they are open to exploration. Steps from the madrasa lead down to the lake. Take time to wander through this space. Imagine what it was like in its prime.

Deer Park is adjacent to the complex. It is a pleasant place for a stroll. You will also find more ruined tombs there. These date back to the same era. Modern Hauz Khas surrounds the park and ruins. It makes for a pleasant afternoon walk.

Hauz Khas has become a trendy urban village. It attracts visitors with historical monuments. Upscale boutiques also draw people in. You can find art galleries and vibrant nightlife here. The Hauz Khas Complex includes the Royal Tank. There is also a mosque and a tomb. All these date back to the Khalji dynasty.

The Hauz Khas Village has designer boutiques. Restaurants also started appearing in the late 1990s. Today, there are many restaurants, bars, pubs and cafes.

The Hauz Khas Metro Station is nearby. This makes it easily accessible.

Hauz Khas offers a blend of history, culture, and modernity. You will find ancient heritage and contemporary culture here. Whether you explore historic monuments or bustling lanes, Hauz Khas captivates. It has a timeless charm and a vibrant spirit.
