The roar of the Mustang crowd still echoes in my ears. James E Taylor High School. That’s the name that comes to mind when I think about this place. It’s more than just brick and mortar. It’s a legacy.

James E Taylor High School opened its doors on November 26 1979. It wasn’t just another school. It was named for James “Jimmy” Edgar Taylor. He was superintendent of the Katy ISD for an incredible 31 years. During his time the district grew from a small Class A to one with two 5A high schools. That’s impressive growth.

This school has a rich history of academic success. James E Taylor High School is a 1996 Blue Ribbon School. It even ranked 1499 out of all US high schools in 2022 according to US News and World Report. That’s something to be proud of. But the accolades don’t stop there. Think about this: James E Taylor High School’s Academic Decathlon team was a national champion not once but twice in 1997 and 2000. They were national runners-up several other times too. Amazing.

The school also boasts impressive athletic achievements. The Mustang tennis teams were UIL state champions in 1997 1998 and 2002. The girls’ soccer team won the state championship in 2006. The boys and girls swimming and diving teams also have multiple state championships under their belts. These victories show the dedication and hard work of the students and coaches.

But there is more to James E Taylor High School than just trophies and awards. There’s a special detail many miss. Look down at the ground near the main entrance. Do you see it? The compass rose. It’s a beautiful design. It was inspired by James E Taylor’s time in the Navy. It’s a symbol of direction and a reminder that students must work hard to reach their goals. It’s a subtle but powerful message embedded in the very heart of the school.

James E Taylor High School isn’t just a building. It’s a place where students learn grow and achieve great things. It’s a testament to the legacy of James E Taylor and the ongoing dedication of the community. The Mustangs’ spirit roars here. It is a spirit of success ambition and community. It is a place of memories and dreams. This is James E Taylor High School. And this is just the beginning of its story.
