Louis Valentino Jr. served the city with bravery and dedication. He joined the New York City Fire Department in 1984. Valentino served with Engine Company 281 and Ladder Company 147. He later joined the elite Rescue Company 2. Twice he received citations for his bravery. This was in 1987 and 1990.
Tragically, on February 5, 1996, Valentino died. He was searching for wounded firefighters. This occurred in a three-alarm blaze in an illegal Flatlands garage. The Louis Valentino Jr. Park and Pier preserves his memory. He showed selfless devotion to fighting fires and saving lives.
Before becoming a park in 1999, the City’s Economic Development Corporation originally built Louis Valentino Jr. Park and Pier in 1996.
