Gazing upon Koto-in Temple, one can almost feel the presence of Hosokawa Tadaoki, the famed military leader who commissioned its construction in 1601. Koto-in Temple, nestled within the larger Daitoku-ji complex in Kyoto, stands as a testament to Tadaoki’s multifaceted life. He was a renowned warrior, surviving the turbulent Sengoku period and rising to prominence under the Tokugawa Shogunate. Yet, he was also a man of refined tastes and intellect. Koto-in Temple reflects this duality. The vibrant maple trees lining the path leading to the temple’s main buildings create a breathtaking spectacle, especially in autumn. This walkway, freely accessible, offers a popular photo opportunity. Beyond the gates, however, lies a serene sanctuary where Tadaoki dedicated his later years to Zen Buddhism. He studied under the revered abbot Seigan and became a distinguished disciple of tea master Sen no Rikyū. Two tea houses, Shoko-ken and Horai, grace the temple grounds. Shoko-ken, built by Tadaoki himself, is said to have incorporated parts of Sen no Rikyū’s former residence. Within the temple’s main hall, visitors can admire a simple yet profound moss garden punctuated by a stone lantern and framed by bamboo. Slippers are provided to allow closer exploration, leading to the tombs of Tadaoki and his Christian wife, Gracia. A unique tsukubai basin, crafted from a stone brought from the Korean Imperial Palace, awaits discovery. The temple also houses a collection of rare paintings and artifacts, including an 800-year-old tea bowl. This bowl speaks of an era where such treasures were often destroyed upon their owner’s death, highlighting its exceptional survival. The graves of Kabuki dancers Nagoya Samzaburo and Izumo-no-Okuni also rest within the temple grounds. Koto-in Temple’s serene atmosphere offers a tranquil escape, a place where the echoes of history and the beauty of nature intertwine.
