“Libraries for everyone” it was a unanimous decision of the Osaka City Council in 1970. Today we are standing in front of the Osaka Municipal Hirano Library. This library is more than just a repository of books. It is a community hub a place of learning and a testament to the power of collective vision.
The Osaka Municipal Hirano Library started its journey on July 1 1972. It was initially established as the Higashi Sumiyoshi Library. At that time Hirano was part of the Higashi Sumiyoshi ward. As a central educational resource it served the residents of the Hirano district in Osaka. In 1974 with the establishment of Hirano ward the library was renamed Osaka Municipal Hirano Library.
In 2001 the library moved to its current location. The Osaka Municipal Hirano Library distinguishes itself with its unique architectural style. It stands as the only library in Osaka to embrace a traditional Japanese design. This design reflects its location in the Hirano village a district known for its rich historical heritage. Nearby stands the Nagayoshi Shrine. It is home to Japan’s only Renka site a designated cultural asset of Osaka City.
The Osaka Municipal Hirano Library actively engages with its community. It hosts events like “Renka no Kai” and “Kodomo Renka no Kai”. These events are held with the cooperation of local citizens. The library offers diverse programs. There are storytelling sessions for babies and toddlers. Picture book readings and paper plays also take place.
For those interested in classical literature the library hosts a Kuzushiji reading group. Participants decipher old texts written in cursive Japanese from the Edo period. This activity fosters a deeper appreciation for Japanese literary traditions. The Osaka Municipal Hirano Library houses an impressive collection. It has 95025 books 121 magazine titles 16 newspaper subscriptions and a variety of audio-visual materials. These include 286 DVDs 625 videos and 2035 CDs.
Visitors can borrow up to 15 items for 15 days. This includes a maximum of five CDs DVDs or cassettes. A library card is required for borrowing. The Osaka Municipal Hirano Library also serves as the Sixth Textbook Center. It archives textbooks for elementary and junior high schools in the former Higashi Sumiyoshi and Hirano wards.
