Justice scales. That’s what the Supreme Court of India building resembles. This majestic structure stands before you. It’s a powerful symbol of India’s legal system.

The Supreme Court of India didn’t always occupy this imposing building. Its journey began on January 28 1950. The inaugural sitting took place in the Chamber of Princes within the Parliament House. For twelve years the Chamber of Princes served as the seat of India’s highest court. Imagine the history those walls hold.

The current building opened in 1958. Dr Rajendra Prasad the first President of India laid the foundation stone in 1954. The Indo-British architectural style is striking. The design isn’t accidental. The building’s shape mirrors the scales of justice. The central wing houses the Chief Justice’s court and two large courtrooms. They represent the scales’ central beam.

Each wing has a purpose. The right wing holds the Attorney General’s offices a bar-room and a library. The left wing contains court offices. The building expanded twice. Extensions were added in 1979 and 1994.

A black bronze sculpture graces the lawn. It depicts Mother India sheltering a child. The child holds an open book representing the laws. The balance on the book symbolizes equal justice. This sculpture was added in 1980.

The Supreme Court started with a Chief Justice and seven judges. Its size grew with the nation’s needs. Today it includes the Chief Justice of India and 33 other judges. The retirement age for Supreme Court Judges is 65 years. The original constitution fixed the number of judges at eight. It allowed Parliament to increase the number as required.

Think about the cases heard here. Landmark decisions shaped India. The Supreme Court’s power is undeniable. It oversees a vast jurisdiction and population. Its influence extends throughout India. This building reflects years of history. It represents the ongoing pursuit of justice. The Supreme Court of India stands as a beacon of law and order. Its legacy continues to impact India and the world.
