Picture Gimpo-si a city nestled between Seoul and Incheon. Its history stretches back centuries. Imagine the Gimpo Peninsula a battleground for Goguryeo Baekje and Silla during the Three Kingdoms period. Gimpo’s name first appeared in the 63rd year of King Jangsu’s reign in 475. After Silla’s unification Gimpo was divided into several administrative counties.

The Goryeo Dynasty saw Gimpo’s importance grow. It became a secondary township then later a district with its own magistrate. King Sinjong’s umbilical cord was even buried here. A testament to Gimpo’s significance.

The Joseon Dynasty brought further changes. Gimpo merged with Yangcheon then separated again. The name Gimpo disappeared briefly only to reappear later. The construction of Jangneung Royal Tomb in 1632 elevated Gimpo’s status. It became Gimpo-gun a county with a governor.

Modern Gimpo saw many transformations. In 1914 Gimpo-gun Tongjin-gun and Yangcheon-gun merged. The city’s boundaries changed repeatedly throughout the 20th century. Parts were ceded to Incheon. This reflects the dynamic nature of the region’s development.

In 1998 Gimpo became a city si. The Gimpo Han River New Town boosted the population. A light rail system the Gimpo Goldline improved transport. Today Gimpo is a thriving city. It boasts a mix of modern amenities and historical sites. These include Munsu Fortress Jangneung and the Czong Institute for Contemporary Art.

Gimpo’s economy is diverse. It includes agriculture manufacturing and service industries. A testament to its ability to adapt and thrive.
