How much of Solomon Islands’ soul can a single museum hold? That’s the question that hangs in the air here at the National Museum in Honiara. This isn’t just a building filled with artifacts. But its story began much earlier, back in 1951, during the time of the British Protectorate. Imagine, individuals like Geoffrey F.C. Dennis and James L.O. It found temporary homes, from private collections to the Solomon Islands Teacher Training College, finally finding its permanent residence thanks to the Gulbenkian Foundation. The museum’s journey hasn’t been without its trials. The ethnic violence from 1999 to 2003 left its mark, with some treasures lost forever. Yet, the spirit of preservation persists. Within these walls, you’ll find over two thousand objects whispering tales of inter-island politics, the echoes of World War II, and the vibrancy of Solomon Islands’ independence. You’ll see natural wonders, archaeological marvels, even poignant remnants of the Second World War. But the National Museum’s mission extends beyond its walls. It actively engages in archaeological digs, unearthing secrets from sites like Santa Isabel and the ancient rock shelters of Apunirereha.
