Built around 1309 to 1523 the Medieval city of Rhodes is part of the modern capital city of Rhodes. It sits on the Island of Rhodes in Greece. The city is divided into two parts a high town to the north and a lower town to the south-southwest. The Knights Hospitaller built the high town entirely. The entire Medieval city is encompassed by a four kilometer long wall a formidable defense.

Imagine the Knights Hospitallers arriving in 1309. They transformed the city into a powerful stronghold. Their grand palaces and bustling streets made it a center of power and culture. For two centuries they ruled. They repelled attacks from the Mamluk fleet in 1444 and a larger Ottoman invasion force in 1480.

Then came the Ottomans. In 1522 after a six month siege they took the city. They added their own buildings mosques baths and mansions. The Greeks were forced to move to the suburbs outside the walls. Yet the Medieval character of the city remained. The Ottomans blended their architecture with that of the Knights creating a unique blend.

The Italian occupation followed. They renovated and restored the city to its Medieval appearance. They removed Ottoman buildings in the process. A gunpowder explosion in 1856 which destroyed much of the Grand Master’s Palace further changed the cityscape. Allied bombing in 1944 added to the city’s destruction.
