Moscow a city steeped in history boasts many monuments. The Лесник Sculpture is part of this story. But to truly understand it we must delve into the story of another monument. I’m talking about the Monument to Felix Dzerzhinsky.
Felix Dzerzhinsky was a key figure in early Soviet history. He headed the Cheka and the OGPU early Soviet state security secret police organizations. In 1958 a monument to Dzerzhinsky was erected in Moscow. Grigory Zakharov designed it and Yevgeny Vuchetich sculpted the statue. This monument stood on Dzerzhinsky Square near the Lubyanka Building. This building housed the headquarters of Soviet security services. These services included the OGPU NKVD NKGB MGB and KGB.
But times changed. After a coup attempt in August 1991 people gathered at Lubyanka Square. They saw Dzerzhinsky’s statue as a symbol of Soviet brutality. The crowds demanded its removal. The Moscow City Council voted to dismantle it to avoid damage to the metro station. In 1992 the statue was moved without ceremony to Fallen Monument Park.
Fallen Monument Park also known as Muzeon Park became the final resting place for many Soviet-era statues. These statues once stood in places of honor. Now they were gathered in a green space near the Crimean Embankment.
Interestingly debates arose over the years about returning the Dzerzhinsky monument to Lubyanka Square. This debate continued even after Vladimir Putin a former KGB agent became Russia’s president. Finally in September 2023 the monument was re-erected. But this time it wasn’t returned to its original spot. It was placed in front of the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service headquarters outside Moscow.
