Isn’t it interesting that Bang Khun Thian is Bangkok’s southernmost district? It is the only one that borders the Bay of Bangkok. We are standing in front of the Bang Khun Thian District Office. This office plays a vital role in the administration of this unique area.
Bang Khun Thian boasts a rich history. It was established in 1867 as an amphoe of Thonburi. In 1972, Thonburi and Phra Nakhon were combined into Bangkok. The administrative units were then renamed. Amphoe became “district” or khet. Bang Khun Thian became a district of Bangkok. It originally included seven sub-districts.
Over time, Bang Khun Thian evolved. A portion of the district was set up with its own office. It was called Bang Khun Thian Branch 1. This branch oversaw four sub-districts. In 1989, it became the full Chom Thong District. Later in 1997, Bang Bon also separated to become its own district. This shows how Bang Khun Thian has shaped the surrounding areas.
Today, Bang Khun Thian is divided into two sub-districts. These are Tha Kham and Samae Dam. The missing sub-district numbers now belong to Chom Thong and Bang Bon. The Bang Khun Thian District Office manages these remaining areas. It ensures local governance and services.
Bang Khun Thian is unique because of its geography. It has Bangkok’s only seashore. The coastline stretches about five kilometers. It features muddy areas, mangrove forests, and shrimp farms. Access to the Bay of Bangkok is only by boat. Imagine the crab-eating macaques inhabiting the coast near the sea.
Tha Kham Sub-district is a center for seafood aquaculture. Most residents are aquaculture farmers. However, the industry faces challenges. Coastal erosion and wastewater pollution threaten it. The shoreline has retreated significantly since 1952. Pollution has decreased farmer incomes.
Bang Khun Thian is also home to important temples. These include Wat Kamphaeng and Wat Kok. You can also find Wat Tha Kham and Wat Hua Krabue here. Wat Bang Kradi is another notable temple.
Bang Kradi in Samae Dam is known as the residence of Thai Mon people. The area offers cultural richness. It adds to the diverse character of Bang Khun Thian.
CentralPlaza Rama II is the main shopping mall in Bang Khun Thian. Taweethapisek Bangkhunthian School and Khlong Pittayalongkorn School. These are the dominant schools in the area.
