Established in 1927, Osaka City Suwashi Elementary School has witnessed generations of children pass through its halls. Originally known as Osaka City Joto Second Island Regular Elementary School, it was born from the bustling energy of Joto Higher Elementary School. Imagine young students in crisp uniforms, their laughter echoing against the newly constructed walls. The year is 1930. A new lecture hall and classrooms are completed, marking a period of growth for Suwashi Elementary. Fast forward to 1941. The winds of war are blowing, and the school is renamed Osaka City Suwashi National School, reflecting the nationalistic fervor of the time. In 1944, older students are evacuated to Fukui Prefecture, a poignant reminder of the disruptions caused by World War II. With the war’s end in 1947, the school adopts its current name: Osaka City Suwashi Elementary School, ushering in a new era of peace and education. The school continued to evolve. A separate branch was established in 1961 to accommodate the growing student population. A 15-meter pool was completed in 1966, offering students a place to cool off and exercise. In 1979, the branch school was merged back with the main school. A new gymnasium and lecture hall were constructed, providing modern facilities for learning and physical activities. Suwashi Elementary even hosted a national educational research conference in 1986, showcasing its dedication to innovative teaching practices. Over the years, technological advancements found their way into Suwashi Elementary. Forty-one personal computers were installed in 2003, equipping students with the tools of the digital age. In 2007, the schoolyard was revitalized and a biotope was created. This provided a natural haven for students to connect with nature amidst the urban landscape. More recently, the north school building underwent renovations in 2020 and was completed in 2022, ensuring a safe and modern learning environment for future generations. Suwashi Elementary School stands not just as a building but as a testament to the enduring spirit of learning and the vibrant history of Osaka.
