Have you ever wondered about a place almost hidden by urban development? This is the Capela do Senhor Jesus da Boa Vista. It is in the parish of Bonfim. The Capela do Senhor Jesus da Boa Vista holds stories within its walls. It has witnessed centuries of change.

Two hundred years ago, this site held simple rustic shrines. People came here for reflection and prayer. The location was once a high cliff known as Fojo. Fojo means a deep pit used for trapping animals. It was a dangerous and somewhat frightening place.

In the 18th century, the people built a small chapel. They used alms and generosity. It was first called Senhor Jesus do Fojo. Later, it became Senhor Jesus da Boa Vista. The name means Lord Jesus of the Good View. People believed they could receive good eyesight from God here. They could continue to see the beautiful landscape. Descriptions from the 19th century recall a paradise. They describe its beauty from this city point.

The current Capela do Senhor Jesus da Boa Vista dates back to 1767. It was restored and expanded in 1864. Further improvements took place in 1979.

Besides Senhor Jesus da Boa Vista, people also venerate Our Lady of Porto here. Many consider her miraculous. Her image has been in this chapel since the early 19th century. During the second French invasion in March 1809, French soldiers looted the city. They stole an image of Our Lady. They offered it for money. Lourenço Inverno, a city official, bought the image. He then offered it to the Capela do Senhor Jesus da Boa Vista. Today, they celebrate the festival of Our Lady of Porto. It takes place on the third Sunday of September each year.

The story tells of a miracle in the late 19th century. A severe drought harmed agriculture. A procession was held to ask for Our Lady of Porto’s protection. They prayed for rain to return to the streams and fountains. The image left the Capela do Senhor Jesus da Boa Vista. It went to Campo 24 de Agosto. It ascended to the Church of Bonfim. After a stop, it returned to the chapel. Then the rain came.

The Capela do Senhor Jesus da Boa Vista also celebrates Senhor Jesus da Boa Vista. Manuel Soares de Oliveira, a sculptor from Porto, created the image. He promised to sculpt it if he avoided military service. He fulfilled his promise by offering the statue to this chapel.

The Fojo location was a strategic point in the city’s defense. This was evident during the second French invasion of 1809. It was also important during the Siege of Porto. Entrenchments stretched from Bonfim hill to the Capela do Senhor Jesus da Boa Vista. The batteries of Bonfim, Cativo, and Fojo were crucial. The Battle of Fojo occurred on September 29, 1832. After nine hours, the liberals repelled the Miguelistas.

Today, the Capela do Senhor Jesus da Boa Vista stands. It is a testament to faith and resilience. While the surrounding landscape has changed, its spirit endures. The Capela do Senhor Jesus da Boa Vista remains a place of devotion. It is a landmark with a rich history.
