Amidst the rolling hills of Guimarães lies the quaint village of São Faustino. This charming village, once part of a larger union, holds a unique story. São Faustino’s tale intertwines with the political tides of Portugal, echoing the voices of its people and their desire for autonomy. In 2013, a wave of administrative reforms swept across Portugal. This resulted in the merging of many smaller parishes, including São Faustino, into larger unions. For São Faustino, this meant joining with Tabuadelo. The union, however, didn’t extinguish the distinct identity of São Faustino. The yearning for separation remained strong. This sentiment resonated with other united parishes in Guimarães. These included Prazins Santo Tirso e Corvite, Airão Santa Maria, Airão São João e Vermil, Conde e Gandarela, and Sande Vila Nova e Sande São Clemente. In a momentous decision in 2025, the Portuguese parliament voted to de-aggregate 135 unions. This decision promised to restore the independence of São Faustino and other parishes. The joy, however, was short-lived. President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa vetoed the decree. This sparked a wave of reactions in Guimarães. Words like “surprise,” “frustration,” and “sadness” captured the mood in São Faustino and surrounding areas. Carlos Sousa, the president of the Tabuadelo and São Faustino union, expressed his disappointment. He spoke of the imposed solution of the initial merger and the lengthy process leading to the desegregation vote. The veto dealt a blow to the hopes of the community. Despite the setback, the story of São Faustino highlights the community’s resilience and their unwavering pursuit of their own identity. São Faustino continues to hold its own within the landscape of Guimarães. It stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of its people.
