Saint Pauls Catholic Church wasn’t always this impressive edifice. Its origins trace back to the 1920s. Bishop John Joseph Cantwell envisioned a parish for Westwood and UCLA. He tasked the Paulist Fathers with this mission. They began in 1928 holding Mass in a storefront. A desk served as the altar. Imagine the humble beginnings of this now-iconic church.
For four years the priests moved from location to location. They searched for the perfect spot to build. Finally in the 1930s they acquired the current land on Ohio and Selby Avenues. The first church building a smaller structure now the John Carroll Parish Center opened in 1932. The adjoining school started in 1935. The Daughters of Mary and Joseph staffed it from the very beginning.
The original church proved too small. The parish and school grew rapidly. Thanks to generous parishioners construction of the current church began in 1956. It was completed and dedicated on June 29 1958. The Feast of Saints Peter and Paul marked this momentous occasion.
