Heard of the oldest show cave in Austria? That is the Grasslhöhle. It sits near Weiz in Dürntal.
The Grasslhöhle is known for its rich display of stalactites. Some of these formations are up to 100000 years old. Imagine the stories these ancient stones could tell.
According to legend a shepherd boy discovered the Grasslhöhle. The boy fell into the cave while searching for a lost sheep. One version says he died but was found years later. Another says he was rescued after three days.
The Grasslhöhle was documented in the late 18th century. Sadly that document is lost. In 1816 the cave was mentioned again. Steps were added. By 1837 it was locked to prevent looting.
Archduke Johann visited the Grasslhöhle in the 1850s. Miners from Arzberg widened the narrow passage to the main hall. This made access to the cave’s rear easier.
Around 1900 cave researchers from Graz explored the Grasslhöhle. They sought help from cave experts in Weiz. The Weiz cave club leased the Grasslhöhle. From 1924 to 1942 they guided tourists. They improved the paths using carbide lamps candles and torches.
In 1952 Hermann Hofer leased the Grasslhöhle. He installed electric lights. Regular tours began. The Reisinger family took over in 1970.
The Grasslhöhle formed when a large water-carved cavity collapsed. This collapse was due to tectonic forces. Today we stand on the former cavity’s ceiling. After the cave formed stalactites began to grow. Climate changes interrupted and sped up this growth.
Inside the Grasslhöhle a forest of stalagmites greets you. The Dome is the heart of the cave with cascades of stalagmites. The Giant is a notable formation. It is 3 meters thick and 10 meters high. Galleries along the Dome’s sides show off many speleothems.

The Grasslhöhle extends horizontally for 70 meters. Its greatest vertical range is 20 meters. It is easy to walk making it suitable for older visitors.
