Sweeping upwards towards the sky, Journey To Atlantis beckons you. It’s a fusion of thrills and splashes, where the legend of the lost city comes alive. Journey To Atlantis isn’t just a ride. It’s a captivating blend of flume and roller coaster, a unique hybrid experience that will leave you breathless and soaked. The ride opened to eager crowds on Memorial Day weekend, bringing a new level of excitement to SeaWorld San Diego. Journey To Atlantis takes its inspiration from Disney’s Splash Mountain. However, it elevates the concept, offering a more intense and thrilling experience.
As you enter the queue, you’ll be greeted by pastel sea-like colors and intricate details. Dolphin shapes adorn the floor, shells embedded in the walls. The queue winds its way into a shaded atrium, a welcome respite from the California sun. Be warned though, even in the queue, surprises await. A seemingly innocent fountain in the loading plaza occasionally erupts, soaking unsuspecting guests. Look closely at the bare footprints imprinted in the boarding area. One set features two left feet, a playful touch that hints at the fun to come.
The Journey To Atlantis experience is a mix of evolutionary design and a somewhat disjointed narrative. The story unfolds through various ride elements and “scenes.” Speakers mounted throughout the ride narrate the tale, but the combination of music, ride sounds, and the excitement of the moment can make it hard to follow the storyline. The real magic lies in the ride itself. It’s a mix of suspense, thrilling drops, and plenty of opportunities to get wet.
After the first exhilarating plunge, the boats enter a tunnel. Inside, water floods in from the sides, adding to the anticipation. The boats then move into a unique “capsule” element. Here, projections of Commerson’s Dolphins dance on the capsule’s faux windows as you are lifted steadily upwards. This unexpected ascent takes you to the top of the main tower, poised for the final, thrilling coaster drop. Journey To Atlantis doesn’t hold back on the waterworks. Be prepared to get soaked, not only from the two main drops, but also from strategically placed water cannons, eruptions, and streams that cascade directly into the boat.
After your watery adventure concludes, take a moment to visit the Commerson’s Dolphin exhibit. Located near the exit, this exhibit showcases these fascinating black and white dolphins. Native to the cold waters of South America, these creatures are a unique and charming sight. Their return to SeaWorld San Diego marks a full circle moment, as they once resided in the area now occupied by Shipwreck Rapids. Journey To Atlantis isn’t just a thrilling ride. It’s an immersive experience that combines innovative design, the magic of water, and the wonder of marine life.
