A soldier’s vow. That’s the foundation of Saint James’ Anglican Church. Right here before us stands this magnificent structure. It’s a testament to faith courage and a remarkable life.

Saint James’ Anglican Church also known as Skinner’s Church is one of Delhi’s oldest churches. It holds a special place in the city’s history. Colonel James Skinner a legendary figure built this church in 1836. He fulfilled a vow he made after surviving a near-fatal battlefield injury. The Viceroy of India attended services here until 1931.

Construction began in 1826. It cost 95000 Rupees. The design is Renaissance Revival style. It features a cruciform plan three porticoed porches and a central octagonal dome. The dome’s design is similar to the Florence Cathedral. The church was consecrated on November 21 1836 by Bishop Daniel Wilson of Calcutta.

Inside Saint James’ Anglican Church you’ll find original European stained-glass windows. They depict the crucifixion ascension and resurrection of Christ. There’s a painting titled The Prodigal Son by Italian artist Pompeo Batoni. A processional cross gifted by Edward Wood the 1st Earl of Halifax is also there. A rare pipe organ gifted in 1899 completes the historical collection. All these treasures are undergoing restoration. The church itself is classified as a Grade II heritage building.

The church’s graveyard holds significant historical importance. It is the final resting place of Colonel James Skinner. His remains were initially buried in Hansi. They were later moved to Saint James’ in 1842. William Fraser a British civil servant is also buried here. His tomb is near the Memorial Cross honoring the victims of the 1857 revolt. Many of Skinner’s fourteen wives and numerous children are buried in the family plot. One lady even requested her ashes be interred here despite dying in England.

Saint James’ Anglican Church continues to serve its community. It holds regular Sunday services. Winter services begin at 9 am while summer services start at 830 am. Queen Elizabeth II visited in 1961. Archbishops of Canterbury have also visited over the years. The church’s rich history its beautiful architecture and its enduring faith make it a truly remarkable place. It’s a place where history faith and community intertwine.
