Born in Osh, Kyrgyzstan, in 1173, Qutbuddin Bakhtiyar Kaki’s life was a testament to devotion and humility. His journey to Delhi during the reign of Iltutmish marked a turning point for the Chishti Order in India. Qutbuddin Bakhtiyar Kaki expanded the order’s reach beyond Ajmer and Nagaur, firmly establishing it in Delhi. His dargah, nestled near the Qutb Minar in Mehrauli, became a beacon of spiritual solace. A famous miracle attributed to Qutbuddin Bakhtiyar Kaki involved the miraculous appearance of kak, a type of bread, in his home during times of extreme poverty. This act of divine provision earned him the moniker “Kaki.” He became known for his unwavering commitment to helping those in need. A devout follower of the Chishti tradition, Qutbuddin Bakhtiyar Kaki embraced music as a means of spiritual expression and connection. It is said that during a Mehfil-e-Sama in 1235, he was so moved by the verses of a qawwali that he fell into a state of ecstasy. He passed away four days later, still immersed in this divine trance. Qutbuddin Bakhtiyar Kaki’s legacy is etched in the very stones of Delhi. The Qutb Minar, a towering testament to Indo-Islamic architecture, is believed to be named in his honor. Even today, his dargah remains a site of immense reverence, drawing people from all walks of life. The annual Phoolwalon-ki-sair festival, a vibrant celebration of flowers and interfaith harmony, is held at his dargah, continuing a tradition that dates back to the Mughal era. The dargah complex also houses the graves of several Mughal emperors, including Bahadur Shah I, Shah Alam II, and Akbar II. An empty grave stands as a poignant reminder of Bahadur Shah Zafar’s unfulfilled wish to be buried near the revered saint. Qutbuddin Bakhtiyar Kaki’s life was a symphony of devotion, humility, and miracles. His teachings, compiled in the “Fawa’id-us-Salikin,” continue to inspire seekers of spiritual truth. His dargah stands as a timeless symbol of his enduring influence, a place where the whispers of history blend with the fervent prayers of the faithful.
