Unearthed in 1926 near Santa Colomba church Canegrate’s secrets whispered from the soil. A necropolis emerged a treasure trove of Bronze Age and Iron Age artifacts. This wasn’t just any archaeological site. It was the birthplace of the Canegrate culture a civilization that flourished in Lombardy.

Canegrate’s namesake a small town south of Legnano and 25 km north of Milan became the epicenter of this ancient world. Systematic excavations between 1953 and 1956 revealed over 165 tombs. These held pottery and bronze objects unique to the region. The culture’s pottery style represented a complete departure from its predecessor the Scamozzina culture. It showcased a distinct decorative style reflecting influences from the northwestern Alpine area.

The Canegrate culture’s story is one of migration and cultural fusion. People from the northwest Alps migrated through mountain passes. They settled the western Po Valley. They introduced cremation a revolutionary funerary practice. Their arrival wasn’t entirely peaceful. Archaeological evidence suggests interactions with local populations were tense.

The Canegrate culture didn’t last long. After about a century it merged with Ligurian populations giving rise to the Golasecca culture. The Canegrate necropolis provides insights into their lives. Tombs were simple pits sometimes covered with stone slabs. Urns often contained the ashes of multiple individuals. Bronze objects collars pins and rings were discovered. These weren’t grave goods but items belonging to the deceased transformed by cremation’s intense heat. The few weapons suggest a society that wasn’t always at war. Infant and adolescent mortality was high. Yet rich funerary rites point to a degree of respect for the dead.

The discovery of two necropolises near each other suggests multiple villages existed nearby. Similar finds in Appiano Gentile Ligurno and Canton Ticino reinforce this idea. Remains of settlements dating back to the late Bronze Age have also been unearthed in Gabinella near Legnano. The Canegrate culture’s legacy is more than just artifacts. It is a testament to a people who shaped the history of Northern Italy their story continues to be uncovered revealing new pieces of a rich and complex past.
