“Making disciples that transform the world” That is the motto of First Corinthian Baptist Church. This vibrant church has been a Harlem beacon since 1933. Its story is one of faith, community, and unwavering commitment.
First Corinthian Baptist Church began humbly. A small group of believers gathered in Mother Sloan’s home. They sought a place to worship and connect. Reverend W.L. Johnson became their first pastor. The congregation then moved to a loft apartment on West 117th Street.
Reverend Thomas H. McKinzie Sr. became the fourth pastor in 1942. His 41-year ministry saw tremendous growth. He led the church to its current location. This is 1912 Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Boulevard. McKinzie organized seventeen church auxiliaries. He believed the church should be vital to the community. It should guide neighbors through life’s challenges.
After his death in 1983, his son Thomas H. McKinzie Jr. took over. He created the New Converts Committee. Also, he formed the Pulpit Aide Ministry. Plus, he established the New Vision Ministry. The church building was designated a historic landmark. McKinzie Jr. ordained four women as deacons. He served faithfully until his death in 1995.
In 1996, Reverend Edward Derrik Porter became the sixth pastor. He launched a Vision 2000 Capital Campaign. This sought to raise $1.5 million.
Reverend Michael A. Walrond Jr. became pastor in 2004. Membership has grown significantly under his leadership. It went from 350 to over 10000 disciples.
In 2006, a $500000 Vision Campaign renovated the interior. “The Sanctuary” was launched to promote the arts. It offers theater, music, and visual art reflecting the community. The church upgraded its sound and lighting system in 2017. This cost was $1000000.
The FCBC community development corporation was formed in 2012. It established The Dream Center. This transformative space offers free programs. These focus on creative arts, leadership, and economic empowerment.
In 2016, Pastor Mike opened the H.O.P.E. Center. This is a faith-based mental health facility. It supports the mental health needs of the community.
First Corinthian Baptist Church continues to evolve. It is a community of visionaries, dreamers, and doers. It strives to love beyond prejudice. The church is committed to serving God.
