The Parliament Museum is housed in the Parliament of India Library Building. It sits close to the Sansad Bhavan. This museum is not just a collection of artifacts. It is an interactive experience that brings history to life. The Parliament Museum tells the story of India’s freedom struggle. It also displays gifts from foreign delegates. These were presented to the Speaker of Lok Sabha.

The Parliament Museum was first conceived in 1989. It was inaugurated by the Speaker of Lok Sabha in Parliament House Annexe. Later, it found its permanent home. President K. R. Narayanan inaugurated it in a Special Hall of the Sansadiya Gyanpeeth in 2002. The interactive museum you see today was inaugurated on 15 August 2006. This was done by President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam.

Somnath Chatterjee, the Speaker of Lok Sabha in 2004, envisioned a modern museum. He wanted it to conform to international standards. Dr. Saroj Ghose, an expert in museum development, was brought in to help. The Parliament Museum construction began. Parliament officials and elected leaders guided the project. The Parliament Museum opened to the public on 5 September 2006.

The Parliament Museum recreates historical events. Visitors participate in these events. This links the present with the past. You will find immersive visualizations. These include a seven-screen panoramic projection on the Transfer of Power. There is also a sound-light-animation-video synchronized walk-through. This recreates the Freedom Movement. Computer multimedia displays video clippings on the Constitution. They also show the Functions of Parliament.

Sixteen recreated period settings await you. These include Democracy in Ancient India and Legislative Reforms. You can also see General Elections of 1951. Animatronics bring Pandit Nehru to life. A realistic silicone rubber sculpture captures his movements. It synchronizes with his “Tryst with Destiny” speech.

The Parliament Museum also offers a unique computerized information bank. Visitors can access visual and textual information about Indian history. They can even download it. A team of 60 professionals worked for eleven months. They created this modern museum.

The Parliament Museum depicts events. It begins with Greek travelers’ accounts of democratic systems in ancient India. It continues to the present parliamentary system. The museum spans over 1600 sq feet. It is open to all and free.

The Parliament Museum is open from 11:00 AM to 5 PM. You can visit from Tuesdays to Saturdays. The Parliament Museum is closed on Sundays and Mondays. However, it opens on Mondays when Parliament is in session. Photography is not allowed inside.
