From Alamo stones to art haven a remarkable transformation. Welcome to Bihl Haus Arts in San Antonio. This isn’t just a gallery it’s a story etched in stone. Literally.

Bihl Haus Arts began life in 1920 as a Hill Country-style German stone home. Built by George David Bihl it stands as the last original residence of its kind inside San Antonio’s loop. The stones themselves hold a secret. Aileen Bihl Locklar George’s daughter remembered her father carting stones from the Alamo’s military barricade. He was a stone mason and he meticulously shaped them to build this home.

The house had a varied past. It served as a dental office a plumbing shop even an auto auction. Then came abandonment and decay. Developers tried to demolish it but historically minded citizens fought back. They saved this piece of San Antonio’s heritage.

In 2003 a retirement community was planned. The dilapidated Bihl house stood in its path. Dr Kellen Kee McIntyre had a vision. She proposed transforming it into a community arts space. Southwest Housing Inc embraced her idea. This was a turning point.

A committee formed. They included artists and community members. Ron Boling from UTSA Art Gallery advised them. They created a plan. Southwest Housing gifted the building to Dr McIntyre and the community.

Renovation began. It cost $250000. The building’s exterior was preserved. The Alamo stones were cleaned. The interior was modernized. The original wide-plank floors remained.

Bihl Haus Arts opened in 2005. Its first exhibition featured local artists. More than 500 people attended. The gallery expanded its reach to South Texas. It hosts exhibitions poetry readings lectures performances and workshops.

In 2006 it won a San Antonio Conservation Society Award. It’s a success story of collaboration community spirit and artistic vision. An eyesore became a vibrant arts center. Bihl Haus Arts is more than a building. It’s a testament to the power of preservation and the transformative potential of art. It’s a vibrant hub fostering community and celebrating creativity. It continues to connect generations and cultures. Enjoy your visit to this truly unique space.
