Picture the Piazza Ducale in Vigevano. Imagine yourself standing in this magnificent rectangle. Its proportions are almost 1:3. This breathtaking square is the heart of Vigevano a town steeped in history and renowned for its shoemaking legacy.

Vigevano’s Piazza Ducale is more than just a pretty face. It’s a testament to the power and ambition of Ludovico Sforza. He commissioned its construction in 1492-93 a remarkably short time for such an undertaking. Ludovico aimed to create a grand forecourt for his Castello Sforzesco. The arcades completely surrounding the square unite the space. This design was a new architectural concept for early Renaissance town planning. It was truly innovative.

The Castello Sforzesco itself is a sight to behold. It’s a majestic stronghold rebuilt between 1492 and 1494 for Ludovico il Moro. This great patron transformed what was once a hunting lodge into a lavish noble residence. The blend of Gothic and Renaissance styles is unmistakable. Leonardo da Vinci and Donato Bramante were both guests here. Bramante is credited with designing the tall tower overlooking the piazza. The castle boasts a unique covered road. High enough for horsemen to ride through it connected the new palace with the older fortifications. A falconry and the Ladies’ Loggia for Duchess Beatrice d’Este add to its grandeur.

But Vigevano is more than just its castle and square. The Cathedral a stunning example of Baroque architecture stands at one end of the Piazza Ducale. Its concave facade is cleverly aligned with the square’s axis. This hides the fact that the actual Duomo is slightly off-center. The Cathedral built beginning in 1532 was finally completed in 1606. Its interior holds works by Macrino d’Alba and Bernardino Ferrari. There is even a tempera polyptych from the school of Leonardo da Vinci.

For centuries Vigevano thrived as a manufacturing center particularly for silk and cotton. However it’s best known for its shoemaking industry. Shoemaking expanded during the First World War. By the 1950s Vigevano was known as Italy’s “shoe capital”. A legacy you can explore today at the International Shoe Museum.

So as you stand here in the Piazza Ducale take a moment to appreciate Vigevano’s rich tapestry. A history woven from powerful dukes renowned artists and skilled artisans. It’s a town that still hums with the energy of its past. A vibrant place where the echoes of history and the rhythms of modern life intertwine. And remember the story of Vigevano is one that continues to be written.
