Ever wonder what it felt like to live in the residence of India’s first Prime Minister? Today at the Nehru Memorial Museum & Library you can get a glimpse into that life. This complex stands as a tribute to Jawaharlal Nehru. It is more than just a museum and library. It’s a journey through Indian history.

The Nehru Memorial Museum & Library aims to preserve the Indian independence movement’s history. It was founded in 1964 after Nehru’s death. Before its transformation, this building was known as Teen Murti House. It was once the residence of the Commander-in-Chief during British rule.

Designed by Robert Tor Russell, the complex is spread over 30 acres. Construction finished in 1929. The building is a blend of British and French architectural styles.

After India’s independence, Jawaharlal Nehru resided here for 16 years. Following his death, Teen Murti House was converted into the Nehru Memorial Museum & Library. The library promotes research in modern Indian history. It especially focuses on the Nehruvian era. The official inauguration was on Nehru’s 75th birthday.

The Nehru Memorial Museum & Library Society formed in 1966. Initially, the museum occupied the eastern wing. The library was in the western wing. Bal Ram Nanda served as its founder-director.

Over time, the library’s collection grew. This growth necessitated more space. As a result, an exclusive library building was constructed. President V. V. Giri inaugurated it in 1974. An annex building followed in 1989.

The Nehru Memorial Museum & Library is home to many resources. It holds the writings of Mahatma Gandhi. Private papers of prominent figures are here too. They include C. Rajagopalachari and Sarojini Naidu.

In 2010, the Nehru Memorial Museum & Library started a digitization project. By 2011, it had scanned millions of manuscripts and photographs. Many are now available on the digital library website.

The Nehru Memorial Museum & Library also supports scholars. Its fellowship program funds academics. It is a leading library for social sciences. It has a large collection on labor issues.

In 2022, the Pradhanmantri Sangrahalaya opened within the complex. It honors every Indian Prime Minister since independence. It showcases their contributions to India’s development. The museum includes rare gifts received by Nehru. They are displayed in the Toshakhana exhibit.

The Nehru Memorial Museum & Library also includes the Nehru Planetarium. The institution focuses on connecting with children. They were close to Jawaharlal Nehru’s heart.

Visiting the Nehru Memorial Museum & Library offers a deep dive into India’s past. It celebrates Nehru’s legacy. It also highlights the journey of independent India. Take some time to explore the Nehru Memorial Museum & Library. Reflect on India’s rich heritage.
