“1782…can you imagine the roar of cannons echoing off these very walls?” I ask, gesturing to the King’s Bastion Leisure Centre. King’s Bastion Leisure Centre isn’t just a place for fun and games. It’s a fortress steeped in history, a silent witness to Gibraltar’s turbulent past. Originally a key defensive position in Gibraltar’s western defenses, King’s Bastion was built in the shape of a large arrowhead jutting out into the sea. The land we stand on today, in front of the King’s Bastion Leisure Centre, was reclaimed much later. Imagine, in the late 18th century, this bastion commanded nearly all of Gibraltar’s western sea defenses and nearby anchorages. Its casemates, now repurposed for entertainment, provided crucial barrack accommodations. It served as the command post during the fierce attacks of the Franco-Spanish floating batteries on September 13, 1782. Even in times of relative peace, King’s Bastion remained a vital military asset. By 1859, it boasted an impressive arsenal of twenty-five guns, including seventeen 32-pounders, two 10-inch howitzers, and six 8-inch smoothbore guns. The King’s Bastion Leisure Centre continued to adapt to evolving military technology. In 1874, it underwent significant alterations. The embrasures were removed to make way for five Rifled Muzzle-Loading guns. These remained in commission until 1902. The casemates, once housing soldiers, were transformed into coal stores and even housed one of Gibraltar’s first electricity generating stations. The 20th century brought more changes to King’s Bastion. Concrete bunkers were added, and it served as a lookout post, equipped with a 6-pounder anti-tank gun. Later, in peacetime, it was used as a saluting battery with a 25-pounder gun. Its military role finally concluded in the 1960s. King’s Bastion was then modified again, this time to house a civil power generating station, designed by local architect Natalio Langdon and opened in 1961. This station operated until the 1990s and was demolished in 2005, revealing the original bastion facades once more. And now, this historic fortress has been reborn. King’s Bastion Leisure Centre now offers a vibrant array of entertainment and leisure facilities. From bowling and ice skating to a cinema and amusement arcade, this place has truly transformed.
