Before you stands the Postmeilensäule a silent witness to centuries of history. This isn’t just any milestone. This is a Kursächsische Postmeilensäule one of hundreds erected across the vast territory of the Electorate of Saxony.

Imagine the scene in 1721. Saxony under Augustus the Strong was a powerful state. Yet its postal system lacked consistency. Distances were often estimated not precisely measured. This caused disputes about postage fees. Enter Adam Friedrich Zürner a clergyman with a passion for cartography. Augustus the Strong commissioned him to accurately survey the Electorate.

Zürner didn’t simply walk and guess. He created a sophisticated measuring wagon. Its rear wheel precisely measured distances in Dresdner Ruten an old Saxon unit of length. The results were recorded in Wegstunden or travel hours a unit equal to half a Postmeile. These Wegstunden were then meticulously inscribed on the Postmeilensäulen.

These weren’t simply plopped down. Zürner specified different designs. Large Distanzsäulen marked city gates. Smaller Ganzmeilensäulen marked full Postmeilen. Halbmeilensäulen indicated half-meilen. Even smaller Viertelmeilensteine marked quarter-meilen. Each stone bore the Saxon coat of arms and the Polish royal crown reflecting Augustus’s dual role as King of Poland.

But the project wasn’t without its challenges. Landowners resented the costs and responsibilities of erecting the stones. The Saxon Landtag even pleaded with the Elector to cancel the project. Augustus had to threaten severe penalties to ensure compliance. Some towns tried to get away with only one stone. Zürner who knew the local situation advocated for their requests many were granted.

Despite the resistance the Postmeilensäulen were an important step towards a unified postal system in Saxony. They offered travelers precise distance information. They standardized postage calculation. They also improved road visibility particularly important during winter nights. This Postmeilensäule stands as a testament to this ambitious project. A symbol of Saxony’s past and a remarkable feat of 18th-century engineering. It speaks of precise measurement of careful planning of bureaucratic struggles. More importantly it highlights the legacy of Augustus the Strong and Adam Friedrich Zürner. Look closely. Each detail tells a story.
