“Is that the only school with a 50-meter pool?” a student once asked. You are standing right in front of Kyoto Shiritsu Kamogawa Chugakko. Kyoto Shiritsu Kamogawa Chugakko is a public middle school. It has a unique feature for a school in Kyoto. It’s the only one with a 50-meter swimming pool. The school was formed by combining three other schools. These were Deryu Junior High School, Kamogawa Junior High School, and Upper Kamogawa Junior High School. At one point, it had a student population of over 2000 students before being split in 1988. Today, it still stands as a testament to the importance of education in Kyoto. You might be surprised to learn about some of its famous alumni. Among them are the freelance announcer Fumihiro Kuroki, the singer Tokiko Kato, and the actor Noboru Ueda. It just goes to show that even a seemingly ordinary school can nurture extraordinary talent.
