Unryu-in Temple a sub-temple of Sennyu-ji Temple stands proudly. It boasts a history stretching back over 600 years. Established in 1372 by Emperor Go-Kogon it served as a vital center for sutra copying. This tradition continues to this day.
Emperor Go-Mizunoo a significant figure in Unryu-in’s story generously donated over 100 tools. These tools essential for the meticulous art of sutra copying are still used. This act highlights the temple’s enduring connection to the imperial family.
Within Unryu-in’s walls a fascinating detail awaits. A running figure of Daikokuten stands guard in the kitchen. This unusual statue from the Kamakura period (1185-1333) is said to bring good luck. Its chest is adorned with a striking peony design.
The main hall Ryuge-den is a masterpiece of Momoyama architecture. Its kokera thatched roof is a testament to skilled craftsmanship. Inside the main deity Yakushi Nyorai resides.
