SMK Subang Utama first opened its doors on December 4 1989. It addressed the growing need for more classrooms in Subang Jaya. It was initially known as Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Subang Jaya 2. The school quickly became a vital part of the community.

The construction of SMK Subang Utama began in 1987. It finished in October 1989. The campus covers approximately 13 acres. It initially had four classroom blocks. They were named Anggerik Bakawali Cempaka and Dahlia.

In 1993 a single-story block was added. It housed workshops for subjects like Electrical and Electronic plus Pipe and Plumbing. That same year five science labs became operational.

On July 30 1994 the school was officially opened. Dato’ Haji Yaacob bin A. Hamid the State Secretary of Selangor officiated. On that day the school’s name changed to SMK Subang Utama.

A Surau was built in 1998. It provided a space for Muslim students and the public to worship. In 2000 a temporary block named Flora was added. It provided four additional classrooms.

In 2003 a two-story computer lab was constructed. In 2009 a three-story block named Exora was completed. It included new classrooms a library and science labs.

SMK Subang Utama’s motto is “Berjaya dan Bersepadu”. This translates to “Success and Integrity”. The school song written by Madam Hajah Kamisah binti Saabin reflects this spirit. It speaks of seeking knowledge and striving for the future.

The Parent-Teacher Association has greatly contributed to SMK Subang Utama. In 2009 the school hall was renamed Dewan Perdana PIBG. This recognized the PTA’s efforts in upgrading school facilities.

SMK Subang Utama has four sports houses. They are named after American space shuttle missions. They are Atlantis Challenger Columbia and Discovery. Students compete for their houses in various sports events.

SMK Subang Utama has received several awards. In 1997 it was named Sekolah Harapan Negara Peringkat Selangor. In 2006 it was recognized as a Cemerlang school. It became one of Malaysia’s cluster schools.

Notable alumni include Hannah Yeoh and Joe Flizzow. They show the diverse talents nurtured at SMK Subang Utama.
