Ten thousand numbered graves. That’s what makes Al Jish Cemetery in Dammam unique. Imagine the sheer scale of it.

Al Jish Cemetery isn’t just a resting place. It’s a testament to community effort. A retired Saudi Aramco employee Tariq Al-Zaidi took it upon himself to number each grave. He wanted to make it easier for families to find their loved ones. He spent six months meticulously numbering 10000 graves. He placed metal plates with numbers on each grave. The numbers are recorded in a database. A map showing the grave numbers is displayed at the cemetery entrance. This thoughtful initiative has been applauded by many citizens. Some were previously unable to locate the graves of their family members.

Before Al-Zaidi’s work many families used stones or wood to mark graves. These markers were often lost or moved. Al-Zaidi’s system solved this problem. It created a permanent record of each grave’s location.

The mayoralty of Dammam supported Al-Zaidi’s project. They provided the necessary facilities for the numbering system. News of Al-Zaidi’s initiative spread. Officials in Qatar and the UAE even contacted him. They were interested in adopting his system in their own cemeteries.

Al Jish Cemetery is more than just rows of headstones. It’s a story of dedication and innovation. It’s a place where community spirit helped overcome a practical challenge. It’s a poignant reminder of the importance of remembering our loved ones. The numbering system created a lasting tribute. It ensures that families can always find their loved ones at Al Jish Cemetery. The cemetery now serves as a model for other regions to follow. It shows how community involvement can preserve and improve such places.
