Gazing at the Marienkapelle, can you sense the echoes of vows made under duress? This chapel, nestled within the Lorettokapelle complex on Freiburg’s Lorettoberg, holds a story woven with threads of war, faith, and a touch of royal near-misses. The Marienkapelle, the heart of the Lorettokapelle, stands as a testament to a victory hard-won. It was 1644, the throes of the Thirty Years’ War. Freiburg’s citizens, facing the French army, made a desperate plea. They vowed to build a “Lauretanisches Häuslein,” a replica of the Santa Casa in Loreto, Italy, if they were victorious. Their prayers were answered. The French retreated, and thirteen years later, the Marienkapelle was consecrated, completed in 1657 along with the Josephskapelle. The Annakapelle followed in 1660, completing the trio of interconnected chapels. The Marienkapelle, dedicated to the Virgin Mary, stands as the central and most prominent structure. Now, let’s fast forward to 1744, another war with France. King Louis XV chose the ground before the Lorettokapelle as his vantage point to watch the bombardment of Freiburg. A cannonball, fired despite an agreement to spare the king’s position, struck the chapel. It narrowly missed the king. That very cannonball, a tangible reminder of a royal close call, remains lodged above the chapel door to this day. Look closely, can you spot it? The Marienkapelle isn’t just about war stories. It became a pilgrimage site, so popular that in 1785, Freiburg’s city council banned Sunday and holiday services there to redirect worshippers back to their local parishes. Inside the Marienkapelle, you’ll find remnants of frescoes by Johann Caspar Brenzinger, restored in 1902, depicting scenes from Loreto. These frescoes, copies of those in the original Santa Casa, preserve images lost to time in Loreto itself. The Marienkapelle, a sanctuary born of a vow and touched by war, whispers Freiburg’s history and the enduring power of faith.
