Imagine Southeast San Diego in 1962. Morse High School opened its doors.

Morse High School serves grades 9 through 12. It stands in the Skyline neighborhood. The school’s address is 6905 Skyline Drive.

Initially, 1,200 students attended Morse High School. They were freshmen, sophomores and juniors. Thomas E. Walt was the first principal. Leila Morse attended the school’s dedication. She was the granddaughter of Samuel F.B. Morse.

The area was still developing. Vacant lots surrounded the school. The landscape was clean and new. There was not much vegetation yet.

Morse High School has a rich history. It serves diverse communities. These include Alta Vista, Bay Terraces and Encanto. Also Jamacha-Lomita, Paradise Hills and Skyline.

In the 1990s, Morse faced challenges. Gang violence affected the area. A double homicide occurred on the school’s front lawn in 1992. But a staff member noted the school was a sanctuary for its students.

In the early 2000s, the school faced academic criticism. Todd Irving was brought in as co-principal in 2006. He assisted Principal Rocio Weiss. Cynthia Larkin is the current principal since 2018.

Morse High School was once the most populous in the district. In 2001, it peaked at 3,142 students. The school was originally designed for 1,800.

The student population is diverse. In 2006 to 2007, 35% were Filipino. 34% were Hispanic-Latino. 21% were Black.

Morse offers many athletic teams. They compete as the Morse Tigers. The school has produced two Olympic gold medalists. Arnie Robinson and Monique Henderson.

Several notable alumni attended Morse. These include football players Archie Amerson and Terrell Davis. Also, baseball players Quintin Berry and Adam Jones. Actor Faizon Love is also an alumnus.

Recent construction has enhanced Morse High School. A new performing arts center and student services building are being built. This project is part of the Whole Site Modernization. The new facilities include a theater. It will have a stage and LED lighting. The project also expands the student quad area. A new parking lot is added.

Morse High School partners with three local colleges. They offer courses and credits to students.

Morse High School continues to evolve. It provides academic and extracurricular programs. These support a diverse student body. The school fosters pride and achievement.
