General Prapas Charusatien, then director of the university, envisioned a commercial center that would rise from the ashes. Siam Square was born, a testament to the university’s forward-thinking approach. Initially known as Pathum Wan Square, its name was deemed too provincial by Kobchai Sosothikul. He, the founder of Seacon Development Co., recognized the area’s potential to represent the entire nation. He renamed it Siam Square, after the historical name of Thailand. Siam Square quickly evolved. It blossomed from an open-air shopping mall into a dynamic center for fashion, entertainment, and education. The 1990s saw the rise of tutoring schools, catering to students from nearby institutions. This cemented Siam Square’s status as the nation’s premier tutoring hub. This area even weathered economic storms. During the 1996 recession, Siam Square faced challenges. The construction of the BTS Skytrain disrupted traffic, pushing customers towards other shopping districts. Chulalongkorn University responded with a revitalization project, transforming Siam Square into a center for technology and development. Today, Siam Square thrives under the management of the university’s Property Management Office. It boasts over 4,200 shops, showcasing a diverse range of styles and services. From trendy fashion boutiques to cutting-edge technology stores, from cozy cafes to bustling restaurants, Siam Square has something for everyone. The crowds here are a mix of students, office workers, and tourists, a microcosm of Bangkok itself. Over 400,000 people pass through Siam Square every day.
