“Was it always a university?” I wonder as I gaze upon the facade of РГГМУ, 2-u0439 u043au043eu0440u043fu0443u0441. Today we explore the Russian State Hydrometeorological University, specifically this building. It stands as a beacon of knowledge in Saint Petersburg. But its story stretches back further than you might imagine.

РГГМУ, 2-u0439 u043au043eu0440u043fu0443u0441 is part of a larger institution with a rich history. The Russian State Hydrometeorological University was established on July 23, 1930. It began as the Moscow Hydrometeorological Institute. This was based on the Geophysical Department of the Faculty of Physics of the MSU.

World War II brought changes. The university was moved to Leningrad. It was then renamed the Leningrad Hydrometeorological Institute or LHI. This marked a significant moment. LHI became the world’s first higher education institution with a hydrometeorological focus.

The institution evolved over the years. In 1992, it was renamed the Russian State Hydrometeorological Institute or RSHI. The name changed again in 1998. It became the Russian State Hydrometeorological University.

РГГМУ has trained many professionals. Over 20,000 specialists have graduated from here. More than 3,000 of those were from foreign countries.

The university has multiple faculties. These include Meteorological, Hydrological and Oceanological. There are also Ecological, and Economics faculties. Others focus on social sciences and humanities.

РГГМУ also has international connections. It gained status as a Regional Meteorological Educational Centre. This was thanks to an agreement with the World Meteorological Organization in 1995.

The university signed the “Magna Charta Universitatum” in 2006. This further solidified its commitment to academic principles.

As we stand before РГГМУ, 2-u0439 u043au043eu0440u043fu0443u0441, remember its journey. From Moscow to Saint Petersburg. From institute to university. It continues to shape experts in hydrometeorology. The work done here impacts lives far beyond these walls.
