Before this plaque stood a vibrant congregation. In 1914 Zion Lutheran Church held its first services under the shade of pine trees. This was a time when Houston was rapidly expanding. The Heights was still considered a suburb a far cry from the bustling city we know today. Only two Lutheran congregations existed then both downtown. The Iowa Synod’s Mission Board saw the need to establish churches in the growing suburbs. So Zion was born.

Sixteen charter members formed the heart of this new church. They purchased land on the corner of Pecore and Beauchamp. Over decades under the leadership of Reverend Ander Reverend Luther M Schliesser and Reverend George Peck Zion grew. By 1950 its membership had soared to an impressive 1600.

Zion’s influence extended far beyond its walls. The church provided crucial support to other burgeoning Lutheran congregations. St Paul’s Lutheran North Side Lutheran Park Place Lutheran Faith American Lutheran and Advent Lutheran all benefited from Zion’s mission and financial assistance. Zion fostered a strong sense of community. It offered a Mothers’ Day out program a preschool daycare a food pantry family counseling a youth choir and seminary scholarships. This reflects a dedication to serving Harris County.

Today Zion Lutheran continues to evolve. It remains a place of worship and community engagement. This simple plaque serves as a reminder of its enduring legacy.
