On May 22, 2015, a suicide bomber struck the Imam Ali ibn Abi Talib Mosque. This is not the Imam Ibn Al Qayyim Mosque. The blast killed at least 21 people. ISIS claimed responsibility for this heinous act.
Just a week later on May 29, 2015, another bombing occurred. This time it was in Dammam. A suicide bomber detonated in the parking lot of a Shia mosque. This attack killed four people. Again, ISIS claimed responsibility. These events shook the region. They also highlighted the rising sectarian tensions.
The bombings sparked widespread condemnation. Doctor Fahd bin Saad al-Majed spoke out. He is the General Secretary of the Council of Senior Scholars. He clarified that terrorists would never succeed in harming Saudi unity. Grand Mufti Abdul-Aziz ibn Abdullah Al ash-Sheikh also condemned the attacks. He called them a crime and a great sin.
