Ever wonder about a place that was once its own municipality but now is part of something bigger? That place is Maasbüll. It is a village with a story to tell.

Maasbüll sits in Schleswig-Holstein Germany. Until recently Maasbüll was a municipality. In March 2023 it joined Hürup. Maasbüll offers a glimpse into rural life near Flensburg.

Let’s step back in time. Imagine Maasbüll in 1445. It was first mentioned as Masbul. This means settlement at the moor. This name tells us about the area’s early landscape.

Bronze Age graves and Stone Age burial mounds dot the area. These sites show Maasbüll has been inhabited for a very long time. The Michaeliskirche in Rüllschau is nearby. It was built in the 13th century. This church stands on a pre-Christian site. The wooden bell tower stood across the street until 1779.

In 1965 Rüllschau and Maasbüll merged. They formed the municipality of Rüllschau-Maasbüll. Maasbüll became the main name in 1969. It was the larger village with a railway connection.

The Neukrug inn has a long history. It was founded in 1752. The building you see today was built in 1911. For centuries travelers have stopped here.

Maasbüll’s coat of arms tells a story. The flaming sword represents Archangel Michael. The two wheat ears symbolize agriculture. Black terraces recall peat cutting. The wagon wheel stands for the location on a busy road.

In 1881 a train station was built in Maasbüll. This boosted the village’s economy. The station closed in 1980.

Today Maasbüll is known for its hidden champion. This is a company that makes wood chipping machines. These machines are shipped worldwide. Many local construction yards use their products.

Farming remains important in Maasbüll. Several farms raise cattle and grow crops. The landscape around Maasbüll is special. It is known as a historical Knicklandschaft. This means fields are divided by hedgerows.

Maasbüll is changing. New houses are being built. A new heating network is being installed. Fiber optic internet is available since 2021.

Maasbüll may be smaller now. It became part of Hürup. But Maasbüll’s history and character remain. Its stories connect to the land. They connect to the people who have lived here for centuries. Maasbüll is a reminder of how villages evolve. They adapt while holding onto their identity.
