In 1873 a decision was made in Nuremberg that would forever shape the city’s landscape. A new street was needed, a northern tangent between the roads leading to Erlangen and Heroldsberg. The city honored one of its most illustrious sons, the humanist Willibald Pirckheimer, by naming the street Pirckheimerstraße. Today, as you stand on Pirckheimerstraße, you are walking through history. Imagine the horse-drawn carriages and early automobiles that once traversed this very street. The Gründerzeit buildings, still standing proudly, whisper tales of a bygone era. They have borne witness to the city’s growth and transformation. The name Pirckheimerstraße itself was once divided, a testament to the city’s evolving identity. Until 1954, it was known in three parts: Untere, Mittlere, and Oberer Pirckheimerstraße. Though these names have faded, the spirit of Pirckheimerstraße lives on. It stands as a testament to Nuremberg’s rich history and its enduring connection to its past.
