Abundant Life Tabernacle

Stepping onto the hallowed grounds of Abundant Life Tabernacle, one can almost hear the echoes of its humble beginnings. Abundant Life Tabernacle, originally known as Williams Chapel Missionary Baptist Church, started in a simple home. In October 1955, thirteen faithful individuals gathered in the home of Deacon and Sister Andrew Benson. This small group, known as the Helping Hand Club, yearned for a spiritual home where they could worship together. Among these founding members were Deacon Equilla McCarthy, Sister Ophelia Scarbrough, and Trustee Lee Jackson. Driven by a shared vision, Sister Naomi Powell suggested “Little Williams,” referring to Reverend Welton Williams, as their pastor. He accepted the call, and with the support of Pastor P.M. Martin and Zion Hope Baptist Church, Williams Chapel Missionary Baptist Church was officially organized on December 1, 1955. The church’s first location was a modest storefront on the corner of Arndt and Ellery Streets. The original 23 members quickly outgrew this space. Just a year later, in December 1956, the congregation marched to a new home at 3111 Elmwood Street. Abundant Life Tabernacle continued to grow. In 1962, they launched a radio ministry on WQBH. By 1964, the mortgage for 3111 Elmwood was paid off. Pastor Williams’ vision for a new edifice led to groundbreaking in 1970. The sanctuary was completed in 1972. The church’s commitment to community extended beyond worship. In 1971, Pastor and Mrs. Williams founded the Williams Chapel Day Care. Over the years, Abundant Life Tabernacle continued to expand its reach, including establishing a ministry in Port-Au-Prince, Haiti, in 1983, opening the Williams Chapel Church/School building in 1985. Dr. Nellie M.H. Williams also began a Through-the-Bible-Study group in 1979. In 2006, Reverend Welton Williams passed the leadership to his grandson, Reverend James C. Jones, marking a new chapter in the church’s history. Under Reverend Jones’s guidance, the church underwent several transformations, eventually becoming Abundant LIFE Christian Church in 2017. Today, Abundant Life Tabernacle stands as a testament to the faith and perseverance of its founders. Their journey from a small gathering in a home to a thriving community church is truly inspiring. It serves as a reminder that even the smallest seed of faith can blossom into something extraordinary.
