Isn’t it remarkable how a building can embody both tradition and innovation? That’s precisely what the H B Allen Centre achieves here in Oxford. The H B Allen Centre is Keble College’s hub for research and a modern venue for various events.

Opened in 2018 by the Duke of Cambridge, the H B Allen Centre marked Keble College’s 150th anniversary. It provides accommodation for 230 graduate students. The H B Allen Centre also serves as a focal point for meetings and conferences.

The H B Allen Centre stands just 300 meters from Keble College’s main site. Once the Acland private hospital, the College acquired the site in 2004 for £10.75 million. Its location is strategically important near the Radcliffe Observatory Quarter and the Science Triangle.

Award-winning architect Rick Mather designed the H B Allen Centre. The design creates a sixth quad for Keble College. Landscaping connects Banbury and Woodstock Roads. This provides pedestrian access and communal facilities. The design subtly nods to Butterfield’s patterned brickwork found in the main Victorian site.

The H B Allen Centre offers a range of facilities. These include a lecture theatre that can accommodate 100 delegates. There are also meeting spaces for 8 to 60 people. For larger gatherings, dining is available in Keble College Hall for up to 300 guests.

The H B Allen Centre boasts six meeting rooms. The Harvard-style lecture theatre is equipped for live streaming and has an AV technician. The Robin Geffen Cafeteria is perfect for conference lunches or drinks receptions. Minnie’s Room is an intimate space for smaller meetings. Mille’s Room is set up for boardroom-style discussions. The Glen Callater Room is a flexible space adaptable for various events.

Notably, the H B Allen Centre houses Oxford Science Enterprises and the Oxford Robotics Institute. Oxford Science Enterprises provides capital to businesses based on University intellectual property. The Oxford Robotics Institute develops mobile robotics.

Heather Barbara Allen, known as Mickie, is the namesake of the H B Allen Centre. As the founder of The H B Allen Charitable Trust, she contributed significantly to the project. Her portrait hangs in Hall alongside other major benefactors.

The total project cost £75 million. Miss Allen’s trust donated a substantial £25 million. The H B Allen Centre stands as a lasting tribute to her generosity.

So, as you explore the H B Allen Centre, consider its blend of history and forward-thinking innovation. It’s a place where graduate students thrive. It is a place where research flourishes. It’s a testament to Oxford’s commitment to progress.
