Before 1875 Rue Godecharle was known as Rue du Financier. That’s a detail many miss. This unassuming street in Ixelles holds a surprising history. It’s named after Gilles-Lambert Godecharle a renowned sculptor. He lived from 1750 to 1835. Godecharle was a prominent figure. He sculpted for Napoleon and William I of the Netherlands. His work exemplified Neoclassicism. His most famous pieces are the pediment sculptures for the Belgian Federal Parliament. Sadly the originals are gone. Careful copies now stand in their place. The originals are at the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium. This street named in his honor was only built around 1860. It’s much younger than its namesake suggests. The street itself is 217 meters long. It’s in the European Quarter a vibrant area. Today the area is undergoing transformation. A modern building project is underway on Rue Godecharle. It includes apartments and workspace. The project respects the neighborhood’s character. It prioritizes green spaces and communal areas for residents. This blends modern design with nods to classic architecture. The project aims for sustainable construction. It’s a testament to the area’s evolution. It’s a place where history and modernity blend beautifully. So next time you walk down Rue Godecharle remember its unique story. Remember the artist it’s named for. Remember the quiet transformation underway. It’s far more than just a street. It’s a piece of Brussels history waiting to be rediscovered.
