It is also known as the Qatar State Mosque. This grand structure is Qatar’s national mosque. It bears the name of Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab. He was a Muslim preacher and scholar. He founded Wahhabism.

The Mohammad Ibn Abdulwahab Mosque opened in 2011. The Emir of Qatar himself presided over the opening ceremony. Sheikh Jassim bin Mohammed Al-Thani originally conceived the idea. He wanted to honor his father’s memory. He decided to build a grand mosque in Doha in 1878.

Overall the mosque can house 30000 worshippers. This includes the outdoor area. The project covers 175164 square meters. The building itself covers 27644 square meters.

Consider the various components of the Mohammad Ibn Abdulwahab Mosque. The basement houses ablution areas and bathrooms for men. It also contains machine areas. The ground floor features the main prayer hall for men. There are also ablution areas for women. Ablution and bath areas are available for those with special needs. The mezzanine includes a prayer area for women. There is an extra prayer space for men. You can also find a library. Halls for Koran memorization are here too. Covered parking accommodates about 347 cars. A VIP area is also provided.

The mosque is illuminated by 28 copper chandeliers. They hang at a height of 14 meters. Advanced audio systems minimize echo. Cameras provide live television broadcasts. Parking spaces accommodate approximately 3000 cars. A green belt of trees surrounds the mosque. The courtyard floor is covered in polished earth-colored marble. Sixty-five small domes shade the arcades. Copper chandeliers illuminate the arcades at night. The mihrab is 11 meters high. It is covered with white marble. The name of Allah is inscribed in its upper part. Two small domes decorate the mihrab’s exterior. This brings the total number of domes to 96.

Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab promoted adherence to Islamic law. He insisted on returning directly to the Quran. He opposed blind following. He called for independent legal reasoning. He became opposed to certain rituals. These included visiting and venerating shrines. He condemned these as heretical innovations.
