But alas, her eldest son, Walter, succumbed to the pressure of the times and embraced Protestantism. He became Lord Mayor of Dublin and, in a shocking betrayal, had his own mother arrested and imprisoned in Dublin Castle. Margaret refused to renounce her faith despite facing hardship and a slow death in the cold, damp dungeon. After three long years, she succumbed to sickness and hardship in 1584.
