The story of Takiguchi Temple, or Takiguchi-dera, reveals a heartbreaking tale of unrequited love. This small temple in Kyoto’s Saga area stands as a poignant reminder of a sorrowful episode from the Heike Monogatari, the Tale of the Heike. Standing before the temple, you can almost feel the weight of history. The Heike Monogatari tells of Takiguchi Nyudo, a priest who was once Saito Tokiyori, a samurai. He was smitten with a woman named Yokobue, a low-ranking courtesan, but their love was forbidden. Their differing social status made their union impossible. The temple holds a small garden, a walkway, and two wooden statues, which are believed to be of Yokobue. It is said that Takiguchi Nyudo, after being forced to renounce his love for Yokobue, became a Buddhist monk at the temple. Yokobue, heartbroken, sought him out, but he refused to grant her an audience. It is said that she wrote a song on a nearby stone with her own blood before throwing herself into a river. The stone is still at the temple, a testament to the enduring power of love and sacrifice. The small, thatched roof of the main hall adds to the temple’s peaceful atmosphere, a perfect place to contemplate the bittersweet tale of a love lost but not forgotten.
