Slipping through time, we find ourselves in 1904 Manhattan, Nevada. A bustling mining town where Bertha Ronzone, a woman of remarkable vision, began selling socks to miners. This entrepreneurial spirit would eventually lead to the creation of a retail empire, Ronzone’s, a name that resonated throughout Southern Nevada. Fast forward to 1929, and the Ronzone family sets their sights on the burgeoning town of Las Vegas. Here, at First and Carson, they establish a branch of Ronzone’s, initially specializing in women’s and children’s clothing. Ronzone Playground, though not directly related to the store, stands as a quiet testament to the family’s impact on the city. The store flourished, becoming a cornerstone of the Las Vegas community. By 1938, Ronzone’s had transformed into a full-fledged department store, the largest in Southern Nevada. They eventually settled at 416 Fremont Street in 1946. Bertha’s daughter, Amy, and her husband, Al Adams, joined the family business, ensuring its continued success. The Ronzone family’s influence extended beyond retail. Dick Ronzone, Bertha’s son, became a prominent figure in local politics, serving as a Clark County Commissioner and a Nevada State Assemblyman. He championed education and water conservation, leaving a lasting impact on the city’s development. While enjoying Ronzone Playground today, imagine the vibrant energy of early Las Vegas and the Ronzone family’s contribution to its growth. From a small sock stand in a mining town to a retail empire and political leadership, the Ronzone family’s story is interwoven with the fabric of Las Vegas. Their legacy continues to resonate in the city’s vibrant landscape, reminding us of the entrepreneurial spirit and community dedication that shaped this desert oasis.
