In 1942, a beacon of faith emerged in Los Angeles. Greater Mount Sinai Missionary Church, initially a modest building at 2700 South Western Avenue, embarked on its spiritual journey. The church’s early years were marked by a strong foundation of belief. This foundation revolved around core tenets such as the Holy Trinity, salvation through Jesus Christ, and the eternal nature of the human soul. In 1948, Rev. H.B. Charles Sr. became the church’s new leader. His 41-year tenure saw Greater Mount Sinai Missionary Church flourish and relocate multiple times. Each move accommodated the growing congregation. The church moved to 2610 South LaSalle Street in 1952. Then to 3200 West Adams Blvd in 1964. Finally, it settled at 1800 South Gramercy Place in 1968. Many ministers answered the call to preach under Rev. Charles Sr.’s guidance. They contributed significantly to the church’s development. Among them were future leaders like Rev. H.B. Charles Jr. and Rev. George E. Hurtt. Following Rev. Charles Sr.’s passing in 1989, his son, H.B. Charles Jr., took the helm at Greater Mount Sinai Missionary Church in 1990. Despite facing a challenging period in 1994, the church persevered under his leadership. A team of pastoral leaders supported him, including George Hurtt. The church continued to grow, leading to another relocation. Greater Mount Sinai Missionary Church found its current home at 3669 W. 54th Street in 2008. This move marked a new chapter in the church’s history. The acquisition included not just the main sanctuary, but also several additional properties. This expansion allowed Greater Mount Sinai Missionary Church to broaden its outreach and ministry. After H.B. Charles Jr. moved to Jacksonville, Florida in 2008, George E. Hurtt became the new Senior Pastor-Teacher. Pastor Hurtt has continued the church’s legacy of strong leadership and impactful preaching. He introduced numerous programs. These initiatives focused on nurturing the congregation and serving the community. Greater Mount Sinai Missionary Church has left an enduring mark on Los Angeles. Its journey, spanning decades and several locations, reflects a commitment to faith and community. The church continues to evolve and adapt, always striving to fulfill its mission. That mission: to glorify God by winning and developing Christians.
