Naomi A.M.E Zion Church has witnessed a remarkable journey of faith, resilience, and community service. The church, nestled in Brooklyn, has been a spiritual anchor for generations. It’s more than just a building; it’s a testament to the enduring spirit of its congregation. Reverend Andrew D. Branch Sr. has served as pastor of Naomi A.M.E Zion Church since 2001. His leadership guided the church through various renovations and community projects. One significant challenge involved securing permits for a new edifice. It was discovered that the original 1935 building lacked a certificate of occupancy. Subsequent renovations also had unresolved permits. The church diligently addressed these issues, installing new stair rails, smoke detectors, and a new roof on the parsonage. Rev. Branch, with help from the congregation, even took on some of the renovations himself. These efforts culminated in the granting of a parking variance for the new church building in 2006. The church sold its Rutland Road property in 2004 to fund the down payment for the new structure. Several other improvements were made during Rev. Branch’s tenure. A gravel parking lot was installed, along with new leaders and gutters. The church basement was repainted, and a new air conditioner was installed. The ceilings in the anteroom and above the pulpit were replaced. The parsonage’s upstairs bathroom underwent a complete renovation in 2005. New furniture was also acquired, including red padded chairs for the pulpit and tables for the fellowship hall. The sanctuary received new carpet in 2012 and a new roof in 2011. Beyond the physical improvements, Rev. Branch introduced administrative enhancements. Quarterly Conference reports were compiled and bound. New computer and copier equipment enabled in-house printing. “First Fridays” became a regular event, fostering community engagement. The church also revitalized its Bible study program, which saw doubled attendance. A children’s Bible study was created to allow parents to participate in the adult sessions. Naomi A.M.E Zion Church’s community outreach is extensive. The Summer Enrichment Program offers a valuable summer camp experience to local youth. The Home Missions Soup Kitchen serves weekly lunches, and the Community Food Pantry provides groceries to those in need. Even Hurricane Sandy couldn’t extinguish the church’s spirit. Though the community facilities were severely damaged, the church persevered. Through generous donations and the support of organizations like Samaritan’s Purse, the facilities were restored, allowing the church to continue its mission of service.
