Established in 1939, the Tobacco Authority of Thailand Office, initially known as the Thailand Tobacco Monopoly (TTM), has a rich and complex history. Here at its headquarters in Bangkok, this state enterprise stands as the sole legal producer of tobacco products in Thailand. The Tobacco Authority of Thailand Office wasn’t always the sole player. In its early days, the TTM held a complete monopoly over the manufacturing and distribution of tobacco products. However, with the 1992 ratification of the ASEAN Free Trade Area agreement, foreign tobacco companies gained entry into the Thai market. The Tobacco Authority of Thailand Office now operates under the Ministry of Finance. This shift happened on May 14, 2018, marking a significant change in the organization’s structure and operations. The Tobacco Authority of Thailand Office oversees all aspects of tobacco production, from setting quotas to the final production of cigarettes. The Tobacco Authority of Thailand Office’s influence extends throughout the local market. Their operations encompass the entire supply chain. They purchase tobacco leaves through eight offices around the country and also import tobacco from international sources. In 2009, the Tobacco Authority of Thailand Office, then TTM, recorded sales of 50 billion baht, including exports, and generated a net profit of 5.8 billion baht. The Tobacco Authority of Thailand Office produces nine different cigarette brands: Krongthip, Wonder, Falling Rain 90, Goal, LINE, Royal 90, Samit 90, SMS, and Gold City 90. The Tobacco Authority of Thailand Office also plays a crucial role in the livelihoods of thousands of tobacco farmers. They provide support to approximately 15,000 tobacco farming households, who collectively cultivate between 80,000 and 90,000 rai of tobacco nationwide. The Tobacco Authority of Thailand Office continues to evolve, adapt, and navigate the changing landscape of the tobacco industry in Thailand and beyond.
