1921 A small group started a home-based prayer service. This humble beginning in Highland Park led to the founding of Carmel Avenue Baptist Church. This church was located at Woodward Avenue and Carmel Avenue in Detroit. Pastor Jim Patton led the congregation. This marks the genesis of what we now know as the First Baptist Church of Oak Park.

The First Baptist Church of Oak Park wasn’t always in Oak Park. In 1951 the congregation made a significant move. They relocated to their current location. While their new building on Coolidge Highway was under construction they temporarily met in a theater near 10 Mile and Scotia. This temporary location served as a bridge between eras. It connected the church’s past with its future.

1952 marked a pivotal year. The church held its first service in its new building. Simultaneously they adopted the name First Baptist Church of Oak Park. This wasn’t simply a name change. It signified a new chapter in their history. It also reflected their establishment in the Oak Park community. Puritan Avenue Baptist Church another Detroit church was considering a move. They were exploring Oak Park.

A merger occurred in 1957. First Baptist Church lacked a pastor. Puritan Avenue Baptist Church stepped in to fill this void. The two congregations combined under the leadership of Pastor Richards. This union strengthened the church and expanded its reach.

Over the decades the church experienced significant growth. Dr Harold Warren served as senior pastor from 1961. The church added an extension in 1967. This expanded the building’s capacity. The original sanctuary became a gymnasium. Various pastors guided the congregation. Their leadership spanned many years. Each pastor left a unique impact.

In 2013 a fire caused damage to the building. This resulted in extensive remodeling and renovation. The fire tested the congregation’s resilience. It also highlighted the importance of their community bonds. The restoration was completed. The church emerged stronger than ever.

Today the First Baptist Church of Oak Park stands as a testament to faith. It’s a beacon of hope in the community. Its history is rich with stories of perseverance and growth. The church continues to serve as a place of worship and fellowship. Its enduring legacy reminds us of the power of community and faith.
